African Coaches : Stepping Up To The Plate

Indomitable Lions, Rigobert Song knows what it takes to play at a World Cup tournament after four tournament appearances as a player (1994, 1998, 2002, 2010). This time around, he will be coming out of the dug out as a head coach; a challenge the 46-year-old says he is relishing.
It is the same enthusiasm with which Jalel Kadri led Tunisia yesterday against Denmark for his first World Cup game as head coach. An attacking-minded coach, Kadri remains bullish that Tunisia possess the arsenal to go past the group stage of the World Cup which has been a stumbling block to them in their previous appearances.
For Walid Regragui, it is left to be seen when he can assemble the array of talents at his disposal to play as a collective unit. The Moroccan head coach who was drafted in late in August to replace Vahid Halilhodzic has already succeeded in convincing estranged stars like Hakim Ziyech to return to the fold.
Otto Addo on his part started the mission as a firefighter for Ghana after their disastrous 2022 Africa Cup of Nations campaign earlier this year in Cameroon. Against all odds he assembled a team of his own that went past a star-studded Nigerian side to qualify for the World Cup. His exploits have regenerated interest in the team from the fans who remain confident he can lead them even beyond their 2010 quarter finals record.
