All eyes might be on the established names like Messi and Ronaldo but a number of young feet like Bellingham, Saka, Gakpo, Weah have already announced their arrival on the big stage.
Enner Valencia grabbed the headlines on the opening day of the 2022 FIFA World Cup when his first half brace sealed a two nil victory for Ecuador over Qatar. The 33-year-old reinforced his legend by becoming his country’s leading goal scorer at a World Cup tournament with five goals.
Though ebbing towards the twilight of his career, the Ecuadorian captain is still capable of performing at the highest level and serve as a source of inspiration for younger talents coming through. The young talents indeed, did show up the next day as if to say they have also arrived on the big stage and are ready to take the relay baton. Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka were all on target for England in their 6-2 routing of Iran while teenager Coady Gakpo deservedly notched Netherlands ahead as they went on to beat Senegal two nil. Playing at his first World Cup tournament, Jude Bellingham put England ahead to become the country’s second youngest goal scorer at 19 years and 145 days, just behind Michael Owen (18 years, 190 days in 1998). Bellingham also became just the third youngest ever player to start a World Cup game for England
His team mate, Bukayo Saka (21 years, 77 days) followed suit with a brace to become the youngest player to score two goals in a FIFA World Cup match for England.
