Cycling Cameroonian : Athletes Creeping

The middling show of Cameroon at the just-ended Cycling Tour further exposes the difficulties faced by the sports, highlighting the need of rejuvenation.


Once again, Cameroonian cyclists have left their fans craving for more after the 2023 edition of the International Cycling Tour of Cameroon which ended on June 11, 2023. The balance sheet is red with no lap won and no yellow jersey. They came close severally but fell when it mattered the most. The best Cameroonian, Boris Michel Tientcheu, only ended on the fourth position on the general classification and was 1’20” away from the yellow jersey. Not a completely bad performance but much was expected from them especially as they master the race course than the foreigners who come to overpower them at home. In the last eight editions of the race, Cameroon has won twice with the two glories on the shoulders of Clovis Kamzong Abossolo. The athlete has been a major hope for Cameroon but is unfortunately already close to the door of retirement. This spurs up the need for decision makers to accelerate the process of preparing for the future when the barons must have ended their time. Since the introduction of the Tour of Cameroon in 2003, Cameroonian Cyclists have won the race five times; Martinien Tega in 2004, Joseph Sanda (2008), Yves Ngock (2012), Clovis Kamzong Abossolo (2015, 2021).
The outing of Cameroonians in this year’s edition of Tour of Cameroun could have been middling but depicted athletes full of potentials.
