2023 Women’s World Cup : Timid Start For African Teams

Since the competition began, teams from the continent are yet to secure a win in the competition.

Things do not seem to be going on well for African representatives at the ongoing Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Since the start of the competition, none of the African flagbearers have been able to secure a win. African champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, played a 0-0 tie with Canada in their first outing. Olympic champions Canada went into the game as favourite but could not break down a resolute Falcons side. Veteran skipper Christine Sinclair was denied from the penalty spot early in the second half as her effort was saved by Chiamaka Nnadozie. It was the third meeting between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and Canada at the World Cup with the Nigerian team securing one win and two draws. The Nigerians, on the other hand, were able to stand up to the task and moved on from strength to strength. Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, was named the player of the match following her impressive performance. 
Many expected Canada would carry home the three points especially as they enjoyed 68 per cent ball possession and edging the Super Falcons 16-11 in total shots. With one match completed for all teams in Group B, Australia sit on top with three points, while Canada and Nigeria inhabit the next few spots with a point each. Group B is considered by many to be the Group of Death at this 2023 World Cup for how evenly matched the teams are, and the 0-0 draw will only serve to make the battle for the top two spots even more fierce with...
