Nature, Wildlife Protection : Stakeholders Evaluate Road Covered
A steering committee meeting for some five schemes under the Programme for the Sustainable management of Natural Resources held in Buea last August 2, 2023.
Cameroon has invested some FCFA 33,800,000,000 in the bio-diversity-rich South West Region of Cameroon in cooperation with Germany through their KFW funding to preserve high-value ecosystems. That implies the improvement of livelihoods of the surrounding communities in 71 villages of four administrative Divisions of the project implementation area. Actions on the field involve to protect species, promote ecotourism, secure protected areas, and strengthen the fight against poaching. Areas of intervention include the Korup National Park as one of Africa’s oldest and richest rainforests, Takamanda National Park as home to critically endangered Cross River Gorilla, Mount Cameroon National Park as a diversity hot spot at the foot of an active volcano bed, Bakossi National Park in the highlands, and the Bayang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary for the protection of large mammals.
As a routine to control these projects, its yearly steering committee met in Buea last week (2 August, 2023) to assess field work of 2022 and present plans for 2023. On the occasion, the Inspector General at the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife, Bruno Mfou’ou Mfou’ou, sat in for the Minister and called for more concerted efforts to make environmental protection a central endeavour.
