Para Taekwondo : Charming Cameroonian Youths

Even though it is little known, the sports discipline has brought international recognition for the country.

 

Para taekwondo is a martial art designed for athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities. It is based on the traditional Korean martial art taekwondo but with adapted rules and requirements to meet the needs of athletes with disabilities. ParaTaekwondo’s history dates back to the 1980s, when the sport was first introduced as a form of martial arts for people with disabilities. In 2009, the first official World Para Taekwondo Championships organised by the World Taekwondo (WT) took place and in 2020 it made its debut at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Para Taekwondo competitions are divided into different disciplines and categories, depending on the nature and degree of the athlete’s ability.
In Cameroon para taekwondo is fast becoming a major sports discipline given its achievements in both the national and international scene. Many youths in the country are getting interested in the sports discipline. Recently, two Cameroonian athletes qualified for the upcoming Paralympic Games in Paris. Cameroon will be present at the upcoming 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. They are Dassi Antionette -67kg and Chemogne Guilhène -47kg. The two athletes picked their qualification tickets during the continental qualifying tournament that took place in Dakar, Senegal, this month. The athletes returned to the country on Monday, February 12, 2024. Reports say Dassi Antoinette, current African champion, won the final against a Moroccan athlete in the -67kg category with a clear score of 23-7.
