Ukraine Crisis: EU Leaders To Hold Emergency Summit

It comes after President Trump's special envoy to Ukraine said European leaders would be consulted but not take part in any talks between US and Russia over ending the war

E uropean leaders are expected to hold an emergency Summit on the war in Ukraine ahead of a meeting between the United States President, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin of Russia in Saudi Arabia. The Jeddah talks to hold this week, are aimed at seeking ways for a ceasefire and also ending the war. On February 12, 2025, President Donald Trump upended the status quo by announcing he was likely to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin soon to start talks to end the conflict, leaving US allies in Europe reeling from concerns that their interests would be sidelined in any deal on Ukraine. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron has convened a meeting of his European counterparts and the NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, in Paris for crisis talks. According to Downing Street sources, the Paris Summit will also be attended by the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer who said, the UK would “work to ensure we keep the US and Europe together", adding the two could not "allow any divisions in the alliance to distract" from "external enemies". After the Paris Summit, the UK Prime Minister will discuss the views of European leaders when he visits US President Trump at the White House at the end of this month. A further meeting of European leaders together with Zelensky is expected after Sir Keir returns from Washington. Meanwhile, US national security adviser Mike Waltz and special envoy Steve Witkoff are said to be going to Saudi Arabia for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Sky News' US partner network NBC News.
