Yaounde : Waste Floods Streets Again!

Overflowing dustbins and piles of dirt can be seen while moving around the capital city, creating a nasty and unhealthy environment for its inhabitants.

The capital city of Cameroon, Yaounde, is once more submerged in garbage. That unfriendly friend in town, constant and present in the form of heaps of dirt, can be seen in almost all the streets in the town. Several neighbourhoods are again turning into pollution midpoints with waste dotted everywhere. It is common to see public dustbins overflowing with dirt, some of which have already clogged roadside gutters. 
The city dwellers are once again gasping for fresh air as they move along main roads in the city. Moving along the stretch of road in the Mvog-mbi neighbourhood, heaps of garbage lie along the roadside, especially at the entrance to the market. This is not the only area crowded by refuse which has been abandoned for a good number of days. Vendors at the Mvog-Mbi market complain of neglected waste that can be found in both small and large portions in and around the market. Justine Awono, a plantain vendor at the Mvog-Atangana Mballa, says they cannot breathe fresh air around the market due to the stench coming out of the overflowing trash bin in the market. “We have waited on the waste collection company for more than a week now to no avail, causing us to empty our trash bags beside the road because the trashcan is full”, Justine Awono, noted. Others like Moussa Sadou say the situation is beyond their control. “We cannot stop selling and abandon our businesses because there is uncollected refuse in the market. We have no choice but to work in this condition,” he explained. At the Mvog-Mbi market, Cameroon Tribune reporter met a worker from the waste collection company, Pertel Ateba, on the ground.
