South Africa 1996 : Unpleasant Souvenir

After missing the competition in 1994, the Indomitable Lions came in 1996 with more determination but were booted out in the group stage.

The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations was a bitter pill for the Indomitable Lions to swallow. The competition was in the 20th edition and it was Cameroon’s eighth participation in the continental football bonanza. Even though Cameroon had already won the Africa Cup of Nations cup in 1984 and 1988 and even reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup, they failed to impress their fans following their poor showing in the competition. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon that did not take part in the 1994 jamboree were booted out of the 1996 competition in the group stage. It was the first time the competition was extended to 16 teams. Cameroon played in group A with the host country South Africa, Angola and Egypt.
During their first outing, Cameroon lost to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa 0-3 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. The goals were scored by Massinga, Williams and Moshoeu. Cameroon managed to catch up in the second game when they beat the Pharaohs of Egypt 2-1 still at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. Omam Biyik and Alphonse Tchami scored for Cameroon. The Lions played a 2-2 draw with Angola in their third match at Kings Park Stadium in Durban. That was the end of their mission to South Africa. Jules Nyongha was the coach that led the Lions to the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
