Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco In Pole Positions

The first leg matches of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers took place last weekend in stadiums on the continent. A total of five matches were played with mixed results registered. From the different results it is likely that north African teams have more chances of representing Africa in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. 

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon lost 0-1 to the Desert Foves of Algeria in the away leg game at the Japoma Stadium. It was the first game of the Lions under new coach and former national team captain Rigobert Song Bahanag. The team failed to win at home and they must work hard to secure their eighth appearance at the World Cup. It will be a tough task for the Lions as Algeria hardly ever loses at home. 

The Algerians returned to the same stadium where they were dumped out of the African Cup in the group stage as defending champions to clinch a crucial 1-0 away win over Cameroon in the first leg of their playoff. Striker Islam Slimani scored with a header in the first half at Japoma Stadium in Douala, justifying his promotion to the starting line-up. 

Egypt beat Senegal 1-0 at the Cairo International Stadium in their first leg of the World Cup qualifier. It was an own goal by Senegal defender, Saliou Ciss at the fourth minute.
