Cassava production : Yields To Double Nationwide By 2030

Cassava production in Cameroon is expected to increase from 5.5million tons to 10 million tons annually and from 25 tons to 30 tons per hectare by 2030 nationwide. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe made the predictions in Buea as he officially opened a three day workshop to evaluate and validate the project document for the sustainable development of the cassava value chain (P2DCVM) in Cameroon on June 14, 2023.
As part of the National Development Strategy 2020-2030 (SND30) of which the government has emphasized  on the import substitution policy as a tool for economic diversification and the structural reduction of the trade balance deficit, the project document for the sustainable development of the cassava value chain in Cameroon which seeks to double the production of cassava by 2030 would also provide an additional 150, 000 tons of cassava flour annually to reduce importation, create 80.000 jobs and reinforce the capacities of 800,000 local cassava producers.
Gabriel Mbairobe during the event which runs from June 14 to 16, 2023 noted that cassava is very important not just for food security but also serves as raw material for agro industries. ‘‘The project aims to build not just the capacity of farmers but help them manage pests, agricultural practices and manage the production of improved seedlings,” the Minister said.
Dr. Besong Ogork Ntui, General Manager of SOWEDA, said cassava production in the South West Region stood at close to one million tons annually.
