Regional Health Fund : Universal Health Coverage Under Examination

Members of Regional Funds for the Health Promotion have examined the successes and challenges encountered in the 10 regions of the country in effectively applying the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) policy by the government.  This was during the 14th session of the Assembly of the administrators of the Regional Funds for the Health Promotion on Friday, February 21, 2025 in Yaounde. The session was presided at by the Governor of the Centre Region, Naseri Paul Bea, who doubles as President of the General Assembly. 
The Governor said the bi-annual gathering should not only end with administrators sharing experiences, but also see how they can come up with an association destined to meet the health needs of Cameroonians. According to the Administrator of the Centre Regional Funds for Health Promotion, Dr. Mama Lucien Ernest, the Regional Funds is some sought of a dialogue structure which constitute of the State, the Communities and Technical and Financial partners with the aim to improve on the performance of the health systems within public and private facilities. Amongst the missions of the Funds, is ensuring the availability of essential medicines and health commodities, improve on governance and the fight against neglected tropical disease.  Noting that they are out to share experiences, the Administrator of the North West Regional Funds for Health Promotion, Dr. Richard Mbarika Fondoh, said the socio-political and security challenges in the North West Region as well as South West Region, coupled with security problems in the Region, have made it difficult for administrators to have physical contacts with various health districts and the population who are the first beneficiaries of the fund. Given that the Health Funds is in charge of making available health commodities such as medications and medical consumables, unfortunately, the bad road network in most of the regions has made it impossible for the administrators to get these medical items to the population.
