The agreements were signed at a workshop in Mbalmayo on March 7, 2025. During which participants also developed communication messages for an imminent online media campaign to promote the rights of People With Disabilities.
In the weeks ahead, the Ministry of Communication, MINCOM, in partnership with the international charity, Sightsavers Cameroon, will launch an online media campaign to promote the rights of People With Disability, PWD. Communication messages for the campaign were drafted at a workshop on March 7, 2025 organised by the Ministry of Communication and Sightsavers Cameroon. Which held in Mbalmayo in Nyong and So’o Division of the Centre Region.
MOUs On Election Role
Also at the workshop, MINCOM signed partnership deals with three local organisations - the Network of Journalists for the Promotion of the Rights of Children and the Vulnerable, REJODEC, the Association of Bloggers of Cameroon, ABC and the Cameroon Platform of Organisations of People With Disability. The agreements aim at promoting the protection of the rights of People With Disability, especially related to their participation in electoral processes.
Three Partnerships
The partnership agreements were signed for the Network of Journalists for the Promotion of the Rights of Children and the Vulnerable by its President, Jules Elobo; the Association of Bloggers of Cameroon by its leader, Thierry Didier Kuicheu and Mvondo Boniface, Coordinator of the Cameroon Platform of Organisations of People With Disability.
Awaiting Message Approval
“All stakeholders were involved in producing communication messages for the forthcoming online media campaign on the promotion of the rights of People With Disability. Some 18 messages were developed during the workshop. After this, the messages will be approved and the campaign will go ahead when everything is in place. During the workshop, the Ministry of Communication signed three partnerships to strengthen its working relationship with them. This is only the beginning of our work with these three organisations!” commented Ngankak Kisito, Director of Development of Private Media and Advertising, and Focal Point for Sightsavers Project in the Ministry of Communication.
Time Well Spent
“The workshop went well. I am happy the objectives were achieved as the communication messages for the online media campaign were produced. From here, I believe everything will be rolled out. It was time well spent,” Manga Assiga Simon Christian, Divisional Delegate for Communication for Nyong and So’o in the Centre Region, added.
MINCOM’s Knowhow
“I am happy that the objectives of the workshop were achieved. It was about producing content to promote the participation of People With Disability, PWDs in politics. We are grateful to the Ministry of Communication for its knowhow to “A Better World project, which is implemented by Sightsavers to promote the rights of PWD. These include the right to inclusive education for disabled girls and boys,” explained Thierry Nguetia of Sightsavers Cameroon.
Finishing Touches
“Once the finishing touches to the content are over, the online media campaign to promote PWD rights will begin. The messages developed during the workshop will be used for the campaign by members of the Network of Journalists for the Promotion of the Rights of Children and the Vulnerable, REJODEC, Association of Bloggers of Cameroon, ABC and the Cameroon Platform of Organisations of People With Disability,” Nguetia said.
True Impact Expected
“Online media will carry out the campaign and we would like the impact to be truly felt. This is especially so as presidential elections will hold in Cameroon in 2025; with council and parliamentary elections due in 2026. After the campaign, we would like to see more disabled people elected councilors, mayors, and why not parliamentarians so that they can lobby for the respect of the rights of the disabled? The rights of PWD are recognized by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Disabled, which Cameroon ratified; the African Protocol on Disability and the 2010 Law on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of People With Disability,” Thierry Nguetia concluded.
The Project
“A Better World” project is funded by Irish Aid and implemented in Cameroon by Sightsavers in partnership with government ministries and civil society organizations. The project aims to improve the living conditions of people with disabilities through the promotion of inclusive education and citizen participation in political life.
